The Center's History

Formerly a boy scout camp, the Mt. Baldy Zen Center was acquired in 1971 and turned into a monastic style retreat center for Joshu Sasaki Roshi’s Rinzai Zen Buddhist community. The center was established and refurbished to allow ordained priests and lay students to go through formal Zen Buddhist training in a secluded and peaceable setting up in the Mt. Baldy mountains.
